Surface-protecting fenders and energy-absorbing fenders, Civil Engineering

Assignment Help:

Question

What is main difference in application of surface-protecting fenders and energy-absorbing fenders?

Answer

Surface-protecting fenders are fenders that make high reaction forces to berthing structures for energy absorbed as energy-absorbing fenders are fenders which transmit low impact to berthing structures for energy absorbed .In fact; principle function of fenders is to absorb berthing energy and transmit a force to structures without damaging them. As a result, in open berth structures, it is pleasing to use energy-absorbing fenders to reduce loads acting on relatively flexible structures. On other hand, for solid berth structures usage of surface-protecting fenders is adequate as they are capable of captivating up large berthing loads.
