Structure of Aldehydes and Ketones

Carbonyl carbon atom is connected to three atoms by sigma bonds. As these bonds use Sp2-orbitals, they found in the same plane and are 120° apart. The carbon-oxygen double bond is dissimilar than carbon-carbon double bond. As, oxygen is extremely electronegative, the electrons of the covalent bond are attracted towards oxygen. Accordingly, oxygen retains a partial negative charge and carbon a partial positive charge creation the bond polar. The largest value of dipole moment,
