Many early civil rights protests took place within Southern states. What was the strategy behind the largest civil rights demonstration, the March on Washington?

In August 1963, some 200,000 supporters of civil rights gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. for the "March on Washington." Martin Luther King delivered his famous "I have a dream" speech. In this speech, he imagined an America in which people would be judged not by their race, but according to their character.
