Steps of Research Proposal
Proposal Content
The researcher is always given instructions for preparing a proposal that indicate the format to be followed. Funding agencies often supply application form and specified format for organizing the content of proposal. The formats and details required may vary, still there is similarity in the type of information that is expected in research proposal. The major components of the proposal include the following areas.
Abstract
Proposal often begins with brief synopsis of proposed research. The abstract provides a frame of reference for reviewers and clear indication of how to proceed. The abstract should be brief (200-800 words) and concise by stating the objectives and methodology of research.
Statement of the Problem
The problem that is intended to study in the identified proposal. It should be stated in such a way that it clearly indicates its significance to the reviewer. Research should state the problem that is realistic, practical, feasible and significant to the situation, it
should not promise more than what can be produced. A broad and complex problem may become difficult to solve or manage the study.
Significance of the Problem
The proposal needs to describe the importance of research under study. It needs to specify clearly how the proposed research will make a contribution to knowledge. The proposal should indicate the expected generalizability of the research, its contribution
to theory, its potentials for improving nursing practice, patient care and possible applications and consequences of the knowledge to be gained. For example the study to assess knowledge, attitude and skills of TBA will help to identify the practices of TBA's to reduce to MMR and IMR.
Background of the Problem
The proposal should indicate that the intended research builds on what has already been done in this area. The background material should strengthen the researchers arguments related to significance of the study, orient the reader to what is already known about the problem, and indicate how the proposed research will augment that knowledge. It should also demonstrate researchers command of current knowledge in the field.
