Stems transport liquids
(a) Cut about 2 cm from the end of stems of celery and place them in cold water for about an hour to freshen. Next place the stems in dishes having red ink and let them stand for various hours. Observe the Stalks carefully. Cut them up into various Short lengths and observe where the ink has moved upward in the stem. Try to pull some of the tubes out of the celery stems.
(b) Cut about 2 cm from the end of the flower stalks of white carnations. The cutting Should be done with a sharp knife and under water. Place the stems with flowers in glasses having different shades of food colouring or coloured ink. Observe after various hours.
