Since the late 1800s, physicians have recognised that migraine attacks may lead to infarcts and permanent neurological deficits. Such migraine strokes are relatively rare compared with other types, but they are believed to account for a significant proportion of strokes in young people (under 40 years of age), especially women. The immediate cause of these strokes is probably some form of vasospasm-constriction of blood vessels-but the underlying cause of the vasospasm remains a mystery.
