State the Effects of alcohol and smoking for diabetics patient

A major concern with alcohol consumption is the potential danger of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), especially when patient is on sulphonylureas (sugar reducing tablets). If the patient is addicted to alcohol, advise the family to consult a doctor for further help.

Diabetic patients should be advised to stop smoking as it increases the risk of getting heart disease. Studies have shown that smoking is a major factor to cause heart disease. 60-70% of death in diabetic patients is due to heart disease. Hence, diabetes plus smoking is a combination that damages heart of the patient. If the patient stops smoking chances of heart disease is reduced since cholesterol, sugar and blood pressure are under control.
