Standard temperature and pressure, Chemistry

Assignment Help:

Q.Waht are Standard Temperature and Pressure?

Ans.

The agreed set of conditions for comparison of gas volumes is called standard temperature and pressure (abbreviated STP). It is defined as:

  • Standard temperature = 273 K or 0 oC
  • Standard pressure = 1 atm or 760 torr or 760 mm Hg or 101.3 kPa

Note: atm is the abbreviation for atmospheric pressure; torr is a small pressure unit that is synonymous with mm Hg, or millimeters of mercury; and kPa stands for kilopascals.

The molar volume of a gas is the volume that one mole of that gas occupies at a given temperature and pressure. Standard molar volume is the volume of a gas at STP. Standard molar volume for all gases is 22.4 L. It is important to remember this value.
