Show the factors affecting equilibrium position, Chemistry

Q. Show the Factors Affecting Equilibrium Position?

Ans.

The term equilibrium position refers to the relative proportions of reactants and products in the equilibrium mixture. A shift of the equilibrium position to the right means an increase in the proportion of the products. A shift of the equilibrium position to the left means an increase in the production of the reactants.

These are the conditions which are commonly changed:

  • Concentrations of reactants or products
  • Temperature
  • Pressure (This is only important in reactions involving gases.)

The effect of changes in concentration, temperature, and pressure on an equilibrium position may be predicted by Le Chtelier's Principle.

Note: A catalyst has no effect on the equilibrium position.
