How did differences in landownership impact voting power in the early eighteenth century? There were more white landholders than black landholders in the colonies, and as a result most African Americans were unable to vote. There were more landholders in the colonies than in Britain, and as a result the colonies had a large voting population that was more politically active. An influx of new colonists from Spain and France purchased land, and as a result they made up a larger voting population than British colonists. The majority of landholders in the colonies were men, and as a result only a very small number of women were able to vote.
