In reclamation involving large volumes of fill and tight programme, shall engineers use marine fill or mud extracted from land borrow area as filling material?
There are two benefits of adopting marine fill over mud extracted from land borrow area:
(a) In certain land borrow areas, it includes breaking up of rock to suitable sizes for reclamation and production rate isn't high. With modern equipment for dredging and placing marine fill, the filling rate is much higher.
(b) Cost incurred for breaking up of rock to suitable sizes for reclamation is very expensive whereas the cost of hydraulic filling with marine fill is lower.
