Q. Show Electron Dot Diagrams for Covalent Bonds?
Ans.
Electron dot diagrams for covalent bonds
In covalent bonds, atoms share electrons in such a manner that each atom is surrounded by eight electrons (or two, in the case of hydrogen), and therefore achieves a noble gas configuration. We can use electron dot diagrams to show this sharing of electrons. To draw the electron dot diagrams for covalently bonded compounds, following these steps:
• Find the total number of valence electrons by adding the valence electrons from each atom
• Use a pair of electrons to show each bond between atoms
• Arrange the remaining electrons so that each atom achieves a noble gas configuration. All atoms, except hydrogen, obey the octet rule and are surrounded by eight electrons; hydrogen obeys the duet rule and is surrounded by two electrons.
