A server is a computer that has been place away to run a specific server application. For illustration, while the software Apache HTTP Server is used as the web server for a company's website, the computer running Apache is as well called the web server. Server applications can be separated among server computers over an tremendous range, depending upon the workload.

Server is also used as a title for computer models planned for use in running server applications below heavy workloads, also called operating units frequently unattended and for an comprehensive period of time. whereas any workstation computer is able of acting as a server, a server computer regularly has special features planned to make it more suitable. These features can include a quicker CPU, more rapidly and more plentiful RAM, and larger hard drives. A server applications refers to network-connected computer applications or "appliance hardware" that offer specific, devoted applications to a network. Use of the term appliance point to the marriage of software and hardware in a sole system that is not greatly customizable for example Google Search Appliance. Such appliances are predictable to work out-of-the-box with little customization and sometimes stay the sole possessions of the company that formed them. The simplest appliances include switches, routers, gateways, and print servers.
