Q. Protein electrophoresis - Measuring Genetic Diversity?
This method is now being used to measure genetic diversity. Genes contain the information required to produce enzymes - which are proteins - and "dictate" the "code" to other cell organelles to do the actual production. Variations in the genetic information coding the production of enzymes will therefore show up in the differences of the protein enzymes that the genes "code" for. Protein electrophoresis thus shows the variations in the proteins produced, thereby indicating the diversity of genes that coded for them.
