Production of nitrogen, Chemistry

Assignment Help:

Q. How to produce Nitrogen on Industrial Level?

Ans.

Nitrogen is produced by the fractional distillation of liquid air. Air is cooled to liquefy it. The liquid is then allowed to warm until the nitrogen boils. Nitrogen's boiling point (-196oC) is lower than oxygen's (-183oC) and argon's. Nitrogen therefore boils off first and is collected.

Nitrogen can also be produced by removing oxygen from air. This is done by passing air through hot coke. Oxygen reacts with coke to form carbon dioxide.
