Principal Stresses and Strains:

Principal Stresses and Strains is a very important link in the analysis of solids so as to make sure safe design of different components of structures or machines or other systems. Here, you were exposed to a deeper insight into the implications of a specified state of stress. You have study how to evaluate the stress components on different planes and also to discover the extreme values of stress components. Additionally, a cursory treatment of the methods of establishing the state of stress in simple cases of joint loading is also provided. This study must be helpful in understanding a specified loading situation and its bearing on the strength of solid involved.

At last, an introductory treatment of different failure theories has been provided with appropriate illustrative examples of analysis and design. Correctly, we have come to the close of Block 1 which undertakes a treatment of easy cases of stresses & strains on simple members.

Now, you are armed along the knowledge & skill adequate enough for undertaking a study of more difficult systems of structures & developing the capability for designing such systems, an activity which might be considered as backbone of engineering field.
