Pressure vs. mole fraction of cyclooctane , Chemistry

Assignment Help:

Consider a 2-component system of cyclooctane(1) and styrene(2) at 350 °C. Both component can be well described with the Soave-Redlich-Kwong equation of state in the mixed vapor and in the pure saturated liquid/vapor system. Also both components can be well described using the regular solution theory in the mixed liquid phase (the Scatchard-Hildebrand Theory).

Your task is to carry out the necessary calculations to draw the following diagrams:

  • The pressure vs. mole fraction of cyclooctane in liquid (x1) and vapor (y1) (in the same graph)
  • The activity coefficients for both components (γ1 and γ2) vs. mole fraction of cyclooctane in liquid (x1)
  • Fugacity correction terms (Φ1 and Φ2) vs. mole fraction of cyclooctane in vapor (y1) (fugacity correction is not unity)

Show all calculations, values that you use and assumptions that you make. Make sure you list all values you use for your calculations with the correct units (if they have a unit) and list the source(s) where you found the values. If I cannot follow your calculations I cannot award you full credit!

Hints: The molar volumes for each component in liquid, vL, and vapor, vV, may be assumed to be the same as the molar volumes of each pure component at the saturated state @ 350 °C.

Plot data with values for the mole fraction from 0 to 1 with an interval of 0.05 to create nice plots (i.e. 21 data points).

You will have to iterate to find the final values.
