Plant layouts - layout design principles, Mechanical Engineering

Assignment Help:

Plant layouts shall provide for a maximum of safety and exposure protection from the spread of fire, with ease of operation and maintenance consistent with economical design. Requirements for future expansion shall be recognized and reasonable allowances made.

Space between units and equipment needs to be provided where necessary for safety, but not wasted, as it usually adds to the capital and operating costs.

The main principles for safe facilities design and operation are:

• Minimizing the likelihood of uncontrollable releases of hydrocarbons and other hazardous materials.

• Minimizing the likelihood of sympathetic detonation of adjacent stockpiles.

• Minimizing the chances of ignition.

• Preventing fire escalation.

• Prevention of facility and equipment damage.

• Providing for personnel protection and escape.

• Minimizing the risk to adjacent land and public facilities.
