Oxidative decarboxylation ofpyruvate: This is an important step in tissues with high oxidative capacity such as cardiac muscle, whereby pyruvate is converted  to acetyl CoA, a major fuel of the citric acid cycle and the building block for fatty acid  synthesis about which we will  learn  in  the next unit.
