Gastrointestinal disturbances and hepatotoxicity can occur. Ethambutol can cause optic neuritis, but this is very rare when using a dosage of 15 mg/kg daily. Testing of visual acuity should be performed at the start of therapy, and monthly if the drug is continued past 2 months. The decision to use ethambutol in children too young to have visual acuity monitored must take into consideration the risk/benefit for each particular patient.
