The best way to maintain quality of air and pollutant's emissions is by using less polluting fuels and processes. Following can be taken to control air pollution.

Source correction method

Air pollution can be minimized at source by taking the following measures.

(a)   Substitution of raw materials: a simple method of control of air pollution is to use pure-grade raw materials for combustion.

For example:

(i)     Use of CNG and LPG instead of coal and gasoline.

(ii)   Use of low sulphur containing fuel.

(b)   Modification in the process:  it involves changes and modification in industrial technologies. For example use of exhaust hoods and ducts over several types of industrial ovens allow the recovery of various solvents that could have become air pollutants.

(c)    Alternations in equipments: it involves modification of the carburetion and ignition systems in automobile engine. For example, in steel industry open hearth furnace is replaced with basic oxygen furnace that poses much less air pollution problems.
