Question 1:

Indicators to compute sustainable tourism are still in their infancy although the United Nation World Tourism Organization and other organizations are making sporadic efforts to development them (Choi and Sirakaya 2006).

Using relevant examples to explain your arguments, analyze the role of indicators in the measurement of sustainable growth.

Question 2:

Since 1970's economic restructuring and the farm crisis have severely reduced rural communities' economic opportunities. Older development strategies such as manufacturing became obsolete and less viable. Many rural areas looked for non traditional ways for sustaining their economies. One of such opportunities has been tourism.

Critically show the factors necessary for sustainable and successful rural tourism development.

Question 3:

Understanding the attitudes of the local residents towards tourism development is crucial for local government, policy makers and businesses because the success and sustainability of any destination depends on the active support of the local population. Active opposition has been shown to hinder or stop tourism development (Gursoy and Rutherford 2004).

Critically review any two of the following theories which have been used to study community attitudes towards tourism development. Use appropriate examples to illustrate your arguments.

i. Tourism Area Life Cycle

ii. Doxey's Irridex model

iii. Social Exchange Theory
