Maintenance Operations:

The maintenance operations cover various activities such as:

(a) making good rain cuts in embankment,

(b) clearing the side ditches of vegetation and sedimentation,

(c) clearing the side slopes of excessive growth of vegetation,

(d) clearing slips, if any,

(e) greasing the bearings of bridges,

(f) painting of steel girders and sections,

(g) clearing growth of vegetation in the waterway of bridges and culverts,

(h) repairs to damaged masonry of abutments and piers,

(i) filling up scour around piers with boulders or garland of gabions,

(j) replacing and packing of ballast, and

(k) replacement of worn out rails and fastenings and sleepers.

The gang men are provided with tools like pick axes, crow bars, shovel, rail gauge-cum- level, spanners, hammers, cant board (for checking superelevation), hand signals and spare parts.
