Lifting water with air pressure

Fit a test tube with a single-hole cork and glass tube. Drive out the air by boiling a little water in it. Invert it with the open end under the surface of a jar of water. Atmospheric pres- sure will drive water upwards unless it almost completely fills the test tube.
