Q. Leak Repair Torquing Procedure?
Attempt to tighten only the bolts contained within an arc that includes the leak area plus one or two bolts either side of the leak to the original torque values. A criss-cross torquing sequence should be used. If the leak does not stop, repeat the torquing procedure using increments of 50 ft-lbs. (68 N-m) up to the maximum over torquing value.
If the bolts cannot be tightened, the stud bolts contained in the arc of the leak shall be removed one at a time and cleaned or replaced if damaged. Lubricate the bolts and reinstall. Torque the bolts to the full torque value. Follow the same torquing sequence as above. Repeat the sequence using increments of 50 ft-lbs. (68 N-m) up to the maximum over torquing value.
If no results are achieved, go to the bolt on the flange directly opposite to the center of the leak, loosen it and retighten it to its proper torque. Ten, working one bolt at a time on opposite sides of the first bolt, readjust all the bolts on the side of the flange opposite the leak. It may be necessary to repeat this operation to get even bolt loading. When this operation is complete, go back to the bolt in the center of the leak and retighten as outlined above.
If these procedures are still not successful in stopping the leak, consider using hot/cold setting compounds with special enclosures or taking the piping system out of service for permanent repair.
