The Law of the Sea Convention came into force in 1994. Art.56(1)provides the coastal state with sovereign rights for the purpose of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing the fish stocks of the zone.

(a) List three duties that the coastal state must fulfill in association with the above rights.

(b) What provision exists in the Law of the Sea Convention to support the objective of optimum utilization of resources?

(c) How do coastal states usually enforce the provisions of the Law of the Sea Convention in respect to fishing?

(d) Suggest five measures which can be taken by coastal states to improve enforcement in their EEZ.
