When British men and women attempted to establish colonies in North America, they were aided in their efforts by incredibly rich and profitable environments and abundant, available land, just as promoters of the colonial project had promised. To be sure, much of the early work was difficult, but the Native Americans were willing to lend a hand. However, once disease took its toll on the Native population, colonists had to rely on the importation of slaves relatively early in the colonization of both New England and Virginia. As the colonies became more established, they began to modify the social, political, and legal structures of their colonies so as to get rid of as much of English society, politics, and law as possible.
