UN Economic and Social Council:
The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) functions as the central forum for discussing international economic and social matters, and for formulating policy proposals addressed to Member States and United Nations system. This is responsible for promoting total employment, higher standards of living and economic and social progress; knowing solutions to international economic, health and social problems; assisting international cultural and educational collaboration; and encouraging universal admiration for human rights and basic freedoms. This has the power to make or initiate studies and reports upon these matters. This also has the power to help the preparations and organization of main international conferences into the economic and social and associated fields and to help a coordinated follow-up to such conferences. Along with its broad mandate the Council's purview extends to over seventy percent of the human as well as financial resources of whole UN system.
The Council's fifty four member Governments are selected through the General Assembly for overlapping three-year terms. Their seats on the Council are assigned based onto geographical representation along with fourteen assigned to African States, 6 to Eastern European States, 10 to Latin American and 11 to Asian States as well Caribbean States, and 13 to Western European and another States.
