Illustrate saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, Chemistry

Assignment Help:

Q. Illustrate Saturated and Unsaturated Hydrocarbons?

Ans.

The term hydrocarbon is similar to the term organic. The term hydrocarbon emphasizes the fact that these compounds contain hydrogen and carbon atoms.

Organic compounds in which carbon forms only C-C single bonds are said to be saturated. Those compounds with double or triple carbon-carbon bonds are said to be unsaturated. Compounds containing several double or triple bonds are said to be polyunsaturated.

The following diagram shows examples of saturated, unsaturated, and polyunsaturated compounds:

A characteristic of unsaturated and polyunsaturated compounds is that they undergo reactions readily to form saturated compounds.
