How did the eastern church visualize their beliefs, History

The political boundaries established early on by Constantine play an important role in the development of Christianity. Essentially, the Western side of the empire con't with their own traditions in Christianity, including speaking Latin at Mass. Very differently, the Eastern side of the empire, ruled from Constantinople, developed their own ideologies, beliefs, & spoke Greek during their Liturgy.

How did the Eastern (Orthodox) church visualize their beliefs? How are the works of art different in the East from the West? Or are there similarities? Why are works of art so important to early Christians, on either side?
