A buffer solution can be prepared to have a desired value of pH by controlling the amount of acid and its salt in case of acidic buffer and the amount of base and its salt in case of basic buffer. Acidic buffer solutions are generally made from a weak acid and one of its salts - frequently a sodium salt. An alkaline buffer solution, alternatevely, has a pH greater than 7.
