Part II. Elaborate on each of the following topics by answering the questions in general terms, as well as by giving specific examples from the films viewed in class. You may want to consider all the films (and others you may have seen), not just the ones listed above. 10 points each. Approximately two paragraphs per answer.

a) How does the Cuban film industry differ from others? How would you characterize post-revolutionary Cuban cinema? How has the history of Cuba affected the history and culture of other Latin American countries? Which films reflect the Communist/Capitalist divide, for example?

b) Chile and Argentina, despite having had similar stories in terms of dictatorship and violations to human rights, now have quite different film industries. Explain. When did each country make the transition to democracy, and how did the new governments treat their filmmakers in terms of access to resources, education and funding?

c) State terrorism, dictatorship and economic crisis have plagued Hispanic countries since the beginning of time. Who are some of the main characters we have seen in the films studied this term, and how do they portray the countries they represent? Why do you think Hispanic filmmakers often use children to elaborate on the theme of war? What techniques have Hispanic directors used to convey the message of violence and political/economic/social repression, and what can they do for a society trying to recover from it?

d) We can learn a lot about a country by analyzing its institutions. What are some of the institutions you have seen represented in the Hispanic films we have viewed this term, and how have the filmmakers portrayed their countries through them? What (if any) stereotypes (related to visible minorities, indigenous communities, women’s rights, or homosexuality, for example) have you seen built up or broken down through the films?
