Hell Volhard-zelinsky reaction

In presence of Red P and diffused light or Hell Volhard-zelinsky reaction

Carboxylic acid comprising an α-hydrogen react with Cl2 or Br2 in the existence of a small amount of red phosphorus to provide chloro acetic acid. The reaction is termed as Hell Volhard-zelinsky reaction.
