In the Homeotherms heat production must be elevated if the ambient temperature falls below the critical temperature. Although all metabolic processes result indirectly in the production of heat, birds and mammals have evolved processes that have the specific function of generating heat for thermoregulation. These thermogenic processes are basically meant to convert chemical energy to heat.
