The hypochlorites are powerful disinfectants with a wide range of anti-bacterial activity including bacterial spores. The salts of hypochlorous acid (HOC1) like sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) are widely employed. They dissociate to form OC1, which is the ion that is responsible for the bactericidal property.
