The process of meiosis in animals is called gametogenesis .It takes place in the testis in male and ovary in female.
Gametogenesis is divided into spermatogenesis (formation of male gametes -sperms) and Oogenesis (formation female gametes -ova).The result is the formation of four gametes each containing half the number of chromosomes.
During the first Meiosis division in human beings the 46 chromosomes in each cell arrange themselves in 23 pairs. The chromatids each pair move apart and migrate to the opposite poles of the germ cell. This is followed by the division of the cytoplasm.
The first Meiosis division is characterized by DNA replication which forms a primary gametocyte of 46 duplicated chromosomes. This is followed by pairing of each of the two homologous chromosomes of the 46 duplicated chromosomes.
