Answer
Principal function of water stops is to stop liquids, water-borne materials and solids to go through concrete joints. In essence, it plans at provided that water tightness to drainage channel.

Moreover, water stops in drainage channels or box culverts are able to also serve two reasons-
(i) To evade water contacting joints dowel bars and causing corrosion.
(ii) To evade water seeping in from underside of drainage channels or box culverts, thus washing in dirt particles and causing void under these structures and at last leading to their failure. To serve second purpose, clearly only one water stop is necessary at depth location.

To serve up first purpose, water stop has to be installed on pinnacle of dowel bars to stop water from drainage channels from leaking from side to side. On other hand, water stop has to be offered under dowel bars to keep away from secretive water from surging upwards.

In fact, other way out to serve first purpose is by using corrosion anti bars.
