Floating a needle on water

Thoroughly dry a steel needle. Place it on the tines of a dinner fork and gently smash the surface of the water in a dish with the fork. If you are careful the needle will float as you take the fork away. Look at the water surface closely. Can you see how the surface film seems to curve under the weight of the needle ?
