Fire resistance of steelwork, Civil Engineering

Assignment Help:

Q. Fire resistance of steelwork

Because of the high thermal conductivity of steel, temperature of unprotected steel is almost the same as temperature of fire. Because the yield strength of structural steel drops approximately by half when its temperature rises to about 550oC, it is normally provided with some forms of insulation. Consequence of the outbreak of fire in proximity of unprotected structural steel is potential loss of load carrying capacity of steel and occurrence of substantial movement of steel.
