Fibre: Eliminating roughage seems to have a better effect on preventing relapses of the disease. A low residue diet may be given during an acute attack to prevent severe bleeding during diarrhoea. Thereafter some degree of fibre restriction is generally needed as many ulcerative colitis patients do not tolerate raw vegetables. It may cause further damage to the already inflamed mucosa.
