Extrema : Note as well that while we say an "open interval around x = c " we mean that we can discover some interval ( a, b ) , not involving the endpoints, such that a < c < b . Or, in other terms, c will be contained somewhere within the interval and will not be either of the endpoints.
Also, we will collectively call the minimum and maximum points of a function the extrema of the function. Thus, relative extrema will refer to the relative minimums & maximums whereas absolute extrema refer to the absolute minimums & maximums.
Problem: A person has 3 units of money available for investment in a business opportunity that matures in 1 year. The opportunity is risky in that the return is either double o

The value of y that minimizes the sum of the two distances from (3,5) to (1,y) and from (1,y) to (4,9) can be written as a/b where a and b are coprime positive integers. Find a+b.
Consider the system of linear equations X + ay = 1 2x + 8y = b Where a and b are real numbers. (a) Write out the augmented matrix for this system of linear equations.
f Y is a discrete random variable with expected value E[Y ] = µ and if X = a + bY , prove that Var (X) = b2Var (Y ) .
General approach of Exponential Functions : Before getting to this function let's take a much more general approach to things. Let's begin with b = 0 , b ≠ 1. Then an exponential f
