Q. Explain Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus?
It is the most common form of diabetes accounting for 90-95% of patients with diabetes. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus was previously called as Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM). The pancreas does not make enough insulin to keep blood glucose level normal or production of insulin is there but it is not working properly. Many people with Type 2 DM do not know they have diabetes, although it is a serious condition. These patients have insulin resistance.
Type 2 DM is becoming more common due to increasing obesity and failure to exercise. It is common in women with a previous history of gestational diabetes mellitus (increased blood sugar in pregnancy) and in patients with hypertension (high blood pressure) and dyslipidemia (abnormal level of serum lipids) and family history of diabetes.
