The basic qualities of acceptance and concern for others, recognition of the worth of each individual, truthfulness, honesty, self awareness, goodwill, tolerance and caring are desirable counsellor traits.
The counsellors can find themselves at variance in values and lifestyle with some of their clients and with sections of the community, particularly on controversial issues such as contraception, sexual behaviour, abortion, racial issues and drug use.
