Explain the statement- subsidence of the ground

Another type of problem is the subsidence of the ground due to breakdown of weak rocks like limestone, soluble rocks (gypsum) due to solution cavities formed as result of percolation of water. The difficulties are aggravated due to the erratic variations in the site. Such problems are also common in lateritic formations and punching or bending failure may take place in top crust causing collapse of the foundation.
