Henry Mintzberg (1973) has identified ten different, highly interrelated roles attributed to a manager's job. These have been grouped as being primarily concerned with the following:

- Interpersonal roles.
- Informational roles.
- Decisional roles.

Elaborate on the various roles in each group.

Question 2:

All managers, irrespective of where or what they manage, perform four generic tasks. These include planning, organizing, leading and controlling. Planning involves defining goals and mapping out ways to reach them; organizing entails arranging and coordinating human, material and information resources aimed at achieving desired goals; leading involves motivating others to achieve organizational goals and controlling involves measuring performance and monitoring progress relative to objectives. (Lussier, 2006; Hellriegel et al, 2004)

(a) Using a concrete example from the health sector, describe each of the generic tasks a manager has to perform to meet the objectives of the Health Services.

(b) Which of the tasks do you perform as a manager? Discuss the importance of that task in relation to the other tasks.

Question 3:

(a) Explain carefully the roles and responsibilities of Health Care Managers in the local context.

(b) Show the major issues he will have to deal with and possible solutions. Use concrete examples to illustrate your views.
