Explain the properties of low resistivity materials, Electrical Engineering

Assignment Help:

Explain the properties of low resistivity materials.

Low resistivity materials: The conducting materials containing resistivity from 10-8 to 10-6 ohm-m come under this class and are used in distribution and transmission lines, transformers and motor windings.

Illustrations are: Copper, Aluminium and Gold

Properties:-

Low temperature coefficient: In voltage drop and power loss for minimum variations with the change in temperature, such materials must have low temperature coefficient.

Sufficient mechanical strength: These materials should withstand the mechanical stresses developed throughout its use for specific applications.

Ductility: The material to be utilized, as conductors should be ductile so that this can be drawn and moulded in various sizes and shapes.

Solderability: The conducting materials are needed to be joined and the joint should have minimum contact resistance. These materials should have good solder capability.

Resistance to corrosion: The material should have a high resistance to corrosion so that this must not be corroded when used in various environmental conditions.
