Nutrition plays all important role in minimizing the development of catabolism and returning the patient from the catabolic state to one of anabolism. In the post-operative period, nutrition support is used to reduce nutrition deficits that ordinarily develop in untreated patients during the period of NPO (nil orally) after surgery.
