Explain the Muscle layer
This layer consists of two layers of smooth muscle. The outer layer is a longitudinal muscle layer and the inner layer is a circular muscle layer. But there are some exceptions in some organs. Between these two muscle layers, there is a network of nerves called the myenteric plexus. It contains both sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves. The contraction of this smooth muscle layer is called peristalsis. You would realize that it is by peristalsis that the food contents of the gastrointestinal tract are pushed onwards.
