Mechanisms suggested for bile acid adsorption are:

1. Hydrophobic interactions between lignin and bile acids,

2. Hydrogen binding between bile acids and pectins, and

3. Fibre (phenolic and uronic residues) may sequester or even chemically bind bile acids particularly when ph in lumen is low.
