Explain the Functions of Stomach

1. Mechanical function: Muscular action of the stomach helps in the mixing of food with the digestive juices and also helps to propel the food into the duodenum.

2. Secretory function: The stomach secretes gastric juice. Hydrochloric acid secreted from the stomach creates the acidic medium necessary for the digestion of protein. Also, hydrochloric acid acts as an antiseptic agent. Intrinsic factor secreted from the stomach is necessary for vitamin B12 absorption.

3. Digestive function: Gastric juice starts the digestion of protein. Gastric rennin coagulates milk. Iron in the food is dissolved in the stomach in presence of hydrochloric acid.

4. Absorptive function: Absorption takes place to a limited degree in the stomach. Water, glucose, alcohol and a few drugs are absorbed by the walls of the stomach into the venous circulation.
